The explosion occurred the evening of 1-4 (now VN) in the region, close to Montparnasse district, left bank of the Seine.
Local media quoting officials said the fire at least 17 people injured, including 11 firefighters.
"We heard a loud explosion and saw smoke rising", two art students Ferrandi University told AFP. "People are very scared, they thought it was a bomb blast."
"I saw and heard the floor vibrate a loud noise, then smelled smoke," a local man named Jenna Binion told the French press. "There are many people on the street, sirens rang out loud," she added.
Police later confirmed it was a gas explosion.
